| This volume contains several papers presented at the workshop entitled "FUTURE VISIONS FOR IST, CHALLENGES AND BOTTLENECKS TOWARDS THE LISBON 2010 OBJECTIVES FOR NEW MEMBER STATES AND CANDIDATE COUNTRIES TO THE EU". |
| The workshop was held in Bucharest, Romania on October 18th 2004 and it was attended by 110 registered people from 13 countries.. It was organised within the framework of the "JRC Enlargement Action 2004" of the, the European Commission (EC) Joint Research Centre’s (JRC) Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) on behalf of FISTERA (Foresight on IST in the ERA) thematic network in collaboration with the Forum for the Knowledge Society of the Romanian Academy and ROINTERA (Romanian Research Community Integration in ERA ) project. The objective of the workshop was three-fold: (1) to present European Commission’s future research plans in the field of IST, (2) to present current findings of the FISTERA thematic network on foresight work on ICT (Information and Communication Technologies), and (3) to encourage an open debate on development and application of IST (Information Society Technologies) in the context of the enlargement process. |
| In Information Society the web technology offers effective (and, sometimes, sufficient) means for sharing ideas and knowledge. However the editors of this volume (also main organisers of the event) thought that the workshop held in Bucharest deserves a hard copy volume to ensure an almost permanent trace of intellectual collective effort. |
