DATE AND PLACE OF BIRTH: 4 August 1928 in Ploiesti, Romania

EDUCATION:

  • He studied mathematics at the University of Bucharest, graduated in 1950 and became doctor in mathematical sciences in 1955

  • He is also Doctor of Sciences

POSITIONS HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BUCHAREST IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER:

  • 1950-1955 assistant professor

  • 1955-1960 lecturer-professor

  • 1960-1966 associate professor

  • Since 1966 professor at the University of Bucharest

POSITIONS AND TITLES:

  • He was the chairman of the Department of Mathematical Analysis, Faculty of Mathematics (1990-2000).

  • He was elected member of the Romanian Academy in 1990 and since 1992 he is the president of the Section of Mathematical Sciences of the Romanian Academy.

  • He is the Editor in chief of the journals "Revue Roumaine de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées " and "Mathematical Reports".

  • He delivered lectures at Prague (1962) Warsaw, Wroclaw and Gdansk (1964), Oberwolfach (1968), Bratislawa (1975), Paris (1977), Tübingen (1985), Maratea (1992,2000,2004), Florence (1993), Rome (1993,1995,2001,2002), Torino (2003), Bari (2006). He was visiting professor at the University Paris VI (1977) and at the University "La Sapienza", Rome (1995).

  • Ph.D. advisor for Functional Analysis (1967-2006).

PUBLICATIONS:

  • He has written over 100 papers published in Romania and abroad dealing especially with functional analysis and published 15 books. The main books are the following:

  • Ordered vector spaces and linear operators (Abacus Press, Kent, England 1976),

  • Topological vector spaces (Noordhoff, The Netherlands 1977),

  • Applications of the theory of distributions (with G.Marinescu) (John Wiley, London, New York 1973),

  • Notions of linear functional analysis (Romanian Academy Publishing House, 1998).

  • His papers concern the following topics: topological ordered vector spaces; linear and bilinear operator theory; vector integrals, distribution theory and applications. He used for the first time in Romania the ordered vector spaces in functional analysis and his book 'Ordered linear spaces" ( in Romanian) published in 1959 was the first monograph in this field in Romania.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:

  • He guided the "Seminar on Topological ordered linear spaces" at the University of Bucharest (1967-2006) and he was the chairman of the Commission of Functional Analysis of the Romanian Academy (1990-2009).

  • He is the president of the Romanian National Committee for Mathematics.
