Festive session “Romanian Language Day” at the Romanian Academy

The Romanian Academy is organizing the festive session “Romanian Language Day” on Thursday, August 29, 2024. The event will take place in the Romanian Academy Hall, starting at 10 a.m., and will be honored by the presence of acad. Ioan-Aurel Pop, president of the Romanian Academy, who will deliver the opening speech.

Lectures will be given by: acad. Mircea Dumitru, vice president of the Romanian Academy, acad. Gheorghe Chivu, president of the Philology and Literature Section of the Romanian Academy, Prof Rodica Zafiu, corresponding member of the Romanian Academy, and Marilena Rotaru, television producer.

The session will be followed by a poetic moment supported by seven graduates of the National University of Theatre and Cinematography “I. L. Caragiale”, class of 2024: Elena Raluca Asofiei, Alia Maria Andrei, Andrei Rosz, Raoul Alexis Ipate, Ioana Lazăr, Teodora Tudose, Rania Zane.

Admission to the event is free. The festive session will be available to watch on the Romanian Academy's YouTube channel and Facebook page.

Established by Law 53/2013, Romanian Language Day is consistently celebrated by the Romanian Academy, thereby fulfilling the first mission of the academic forum: standardising, cultivating, and promoting the national language as the main identity factor.

Romanian Language Day is celebrated every year on August 31, the date on which, in 1989, the Parliament in Chisinau voted the law that provided for the return of the Romanian language and the Latin script in the Republic of Moldova. A year later, in 1990, the Republic of Moldova established the same date for the holiday called “Our Language”. The Romanian Parliament adopted this holiday, called “Romanian Language Day,” in 2013.
